# MacEdgeLight 3.0.2 > Light for your calls. Brightness for your screen. MacEdgeLight is a native macOS menu bar app with two independent tools: an adjustable screen ring light and an EDR display brightness boost. Neither feature requires the other. ## Product facts - Developer: Richard Crane. - Version: 3.0.2. - Platform: macOS 13 Ventura or later; Apple silicon and Intel. - Ring light: adjustable brightness, warmth, border width, bloom, per-monitor selection, and configurable capture visibility. - Brightness boost: requires a display macOS reports as EDR-capable. Liquid Retina XDR MacBook Pro displays and Pro Display XDR are examples. The app identifies unsupported displays. - Version 3.0.2 update: synchronized menu and toolbar ON/OFF indicators, clearer boost WAITING state, accurate Launch at Login registration state, and a magnifier reset fix. - Other tools: magnifier loupe, cursor reveal, desktop-icon control, and floating controls. - Price: free for uses permitted by PolyForm Strict 1.0.0. No account or subscription required. Source availability is not a claim of an OSI-approved open-source license. ## Version 3.0.2 behavior - Version 3.0.2 queues a rapid manual re-enable until 30 seconds after active boost was turned off. The controls show Waiting. Turning off while queued cancels recovery. This is a conservative timing workaround, not a fixed-luminance guarantee. The boost preference persists across sleep, lock, user switching, and display changes. Recovery keeps checking until the user session and display are ready. Gamma repair runs every 0.5 seconds, each display uses its own current headroom, and stalled rendering is checked independently of display-link callbacks. Turning boost off stops recovery and restores ColorSync. Actual logout terminates the app. Enable Launch at Login for restoration after login or restart. The app cannot illuminate a sleeping display or override macOS thermal/power limits. It does not guarantee constant physical luminance. Gamma scaling is capped at 1.45 and 85% of live headroom, with a neutral floor of 1.0; this is not a measured percentage increase in screen brightness. Night Shift, True Tone, and hardware calibration are bypassed while boost is active and return when it is disabled. ## Why the brightness feature matters Richard Crane, the creator, says: “I am vision impaired and this helps me see my screen.” Extra brightness can help some people with low vision; effectiveness depends on the person, display, and conditions. Do not generalize this personal experience into a medical or universal accessibility claim. ## Authoritative project links - [Website and FAQs](https://chiefinnovator.github.io/macedgelight/): Ring light and brightness boost, compatibility, setup, and answers. - [Version 3.0.2 release](https://github.com/ChiefInnovator/macedgelight/releases/tag/v3.0.2): Release notes and downloads. - [README](https://github.com/ChiefInnovator/macedgelight/blob/main/README.md): Product documentation and shortcuts. - [Technical specification](https://github.com/ChiefInnovator/macedgelight/blob/main/docs/SPEC.md): Implementation and hardware acceptance checks. - [Source and issues](https://github.com/ChiefInnovator/macedgelight): Repository and support issues. - [License](https://github.com/ChiefInnovator/macedgelight/blob/main/LICENSE): Complete PolyForm Strict 1.0.0 terms. - [Apple EDR headroom](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appkit/nsscreen/maximumextendeddynamicrangecolorcomponentvalue): System-provided brightness range. ## Shortcuts Command–Shift–L toggles the ring light. Command–Shift–B toggles brightness boost. Command–Shift–Up/Down adjusts ring-light brightness. Five rapid unmodified Q taps within two seconds quit the app.
